South Florida is one of three main directional regions of Florida. It is only descriptive in nature ant to those who live in South Florida there are no tax or political ramifications. The climate is slightly different but there are rural parts as well as modern highly developed cities.
Yes 17 counties out of the 67 counties in Florida are in the South Florida region. Here they are in alphabetical order. Broward County, Charlotte County, Collier County, Desoto County, Glades County, Hardee County, Hendry County, Highlands County, Indian River County, Lee County, Manatee County, Martin County, Miami Dade, Monroe County, Palm Beach County, Saint Lucie County and finally Sarasota County.
Boca Raton, Cape Coral, Deerfield Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Hialeah, Hollywood, Key West, Miami Dade, Naples, Pompano Beach, Sarasota and West Palm Beach. The cities in Southeast Florida are by far the most dense and the cities in Southwest Florida are probably the better places to live. Better traffic, prettier beaches and in most cases far less crime.
In numerical order the area codes in South Florida are 239, 305, 786, 954, 561, 754, 772, 863 and 941. My wife still has a 561 area code for many reasons. namely because of family in Palm Beach County Florida. With modern cellphones it is hard to know what metropolitan area someone actually resides in because of an area code.
The Southernmost part of Florida other than they Keys, is where you will find the Florida Everglades. This sparsely populated area is mostly a national park. The water ultimately passes through to the Florida Gulf but the watershed actually begins in and area known as the Green Swamp in Central Florida about half way between the east coast and west coast. If you are considering moving to South Florida or even Northern Florida I suggest you consider Orlando or even better the Tampa Bay area.
