The summer heat, sea breezes and the high humidity are the trifecta for creating thunderstorms. Central Florida also has many large lakes to aid the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean waters when it comes to cool breezes.
According to the National Weather Service and the Weather Channel the rainy season has it's beginning May 25th through October 15th. Usually in the late afternoons the atmosphere is perfect for the forming of summer thunderstorms. Usually they last around an hour but will bring the potential for damaging winds, lightning strikes and very heavy rainfall. The frequent lightning strikes are the worst part and all the heavy rainfall does is save me from running my sprinklers as often.
Heavy rain is just a temporary inconvenience in most instances. Central Florida is famous for clear weather and after all this is the Sunshine State. Most rain happens during the hottest days when moist air (high humidity) is making people miserable. Soon after the strong gusty winds and heavy rain subside t is back to normal.
Tropical Storms and Hurricanes also occur during the rainy season. The prevailing winds push every tropical depression that shows up toward north Florida and that means more rain and daily storms for Central Florida. Have no fear, mid October comes soon enough and the cold fronts will take over. Winter is awesome here and will last until late May.
