Central Florida is usually just called Central Florida. There are two large sub areas within Central Florida known as the Tampa Bay Area and the Greater Orlando area or Greater Orlando Metropolitan area. Tampa Bay contains the City of Tampa Florida but also most of Hillsborough County and part of Pinellas County.
Central Florida consists of 13 Counties. The southernmost counties are Hillsborough County, Polk County and Brevard. All counties south of these from east to west fall into South Florida. Central Florida's boundaries actually matter very little as it is basically just descriptive in nature. There are no tax implications or otherwise for Central Florida residents.
On the west coast of Central Florida you will find Pinellas County, Pasco County and Hernando County. The Tampa Bay area consists of parts of several counties and all of the cities along the gulf coast in Central Florida also are included in Tampa Bay. Tampa Florida the city and Hillsborough County are on Hillsborough Bay, Old Tampa Bay and Tampa Bay but not on the gulf coast.
Some areas, county and city names associated with this part of Central Florida are the Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach and Daytona Beach are all in Central Florida. Volusia County's eastern side and Brevard Counties eastern side are on the Atlantic Ocean.
Central Florida & The Greater Orlando Metro Area contain Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Orlando Resort and the Orlando International Airport. A great deal of Central Florida's economy is derived from the 70,000,000 plus visitors to Orlando each year.
I am sure some would characterize Central Florida as tourist centric and nowhere near the same as the diversified North Florida economy. For what it is worth downtown Orlando is amazing and frequented by tourist and Orlando residents alike. The Baldwin Park neighborhood, Thornton Park and Winter Park all play their part as well.
