Inside of a gated 55 Plus Community is the lowest crime area in Central Florida. Someplace like the Villages or Solivita which are gated and filled with middle class older residents will have lower crime rates. We will cover the non 55 Plus area with lower crime rates below.
To me even the national average crime rates are unacceptably high. When you live in Florida or are looking at Florida cities for a place to live it is only natural to be concerned with the cost of living and quality of life. Part of that quality of life has to do with places to live where you feel safe. This is one of the reasons South Florida is avoided by many. Other than North Palm Beach and choosing a southwest coastal city the crime statistics are going to be pretty high. I have lived there and been victimized (property crime) numerous times.
I would suggest Northeast Tampa, Clermont Florida and Oviedo Florida. If you can afford the median home price then Winter Garden FL or Windermere FL also have a very low property crime rate and almost non-existent violent crime rate. In Tampa FL most places south of Interstate 4 have lower crime than most of North Tampa. The north side of downtown Tampa also has more crime than around the south part.
I personally prefer white sand beaches of the gulf coast but if you prefer the safer beaches I would look to Cocoa Beach over Daytona Beach on the Atlantic Coast. Violent crimes can be avoided if you practice some basic measures but property crimes can happen anywhere.
