Is Downtown Tampa Safe?

Yes downtown Tampa is safe all things considered. This is a big city and there is no perfectly safe big city. There will be some violent crime no matter where you are and yes that means anywhere in Tampa Bay. Let's explore it and cover some safety tips.

Downtown Tampa

Downtown Tampa & The National Average Violent Crime Rates

As a preface I walk around in downtown Tampa all of the time. I do all of the writing and photography for this site. I have never witnessed a violent crime although I have seen the aftermath of one or two. What is a violent crime? A violent crime is when someone gets injured physically or violence is used against them. Deeds not words.

Tampa is a little higher than the national average when it comes to the crime rate. In most parts of the downtown area you are fine during the day or evening. As you go further north away from the main crowds or to the east the crime rates increase and there are some dangerous neighborhoods. Ybor City after midnight on Saturday? Maybe I will pass walking down alleys or around north or east Ybor.

Tampa Crime-Property Crime Rates vs Violent Crimes

The crime rates I am concerned with are property crime rates. A word to the wise if you witness a property crime try your best to not intervene or provoke and be aware of your surroundings. Just be a good witness and use good judgement. That is why we have the Tampa Police Department and Hillsborough County Sheriffs Office patrolling downtown Tampa and Tampa neighborhoods.

Common Sense Will Help Keep You And Your Family Safe

Even in the safest neighborhoods in the Tampa area your better off if you use common sense, don't get emotional and conceal your valuables from strangers. Travel in groups or stay in them when they appear safe. Secure your valuables out of sight and not on your car seat when you leave your vehicle.

Rush Hour Traffic Jams are an emotional time for some. Be civil and be wise. Don't provoke people who may be having emotional issues we don't even know about. Finally when visiting Tampa downtown avoid walking where it feels like you are alone and stay in well lit areas. Most likely if you do these things you will never be part of the violent crime rate.
