Yes you can walk around downtown Tampa Florida. The Tampa Riverwalk is the first place that comes to mind but there are certainly many other paths to take. There is something to do or see around nearly every street corner in downtown Tampa.
There are two ways I like to visit the Tampa Riverwalk. One of them is by parking next to Armature Works because it is near the end of the Tampa Riverwalk and when I come back, I can eat there before leaving. Not to mention there is usually plenty of parking.
The Hillsborough River is lined with attractions. The first you will come to the Water Works Park which often gets overlooked by tourists. It is a fun children's water park and the kids love it. There is a splash pad, dog park and outdoor pavilion and outdoor tables at Ulele Restaurant and some more local delicious food.
After you stroll a little further you will see the Tampa River Center on the west side of the Hillsborough River. Often you will see the row boats passing this part of the river. Next up on the east side of the Hillsborough River you will see the Straz Center For The Performing Arts and the Teco Theater two more Tampa Bay attractions. The Straz Center is kind of a big thing and the performing arts are important to Tampa Bay culture in general.
Three popular destinations and downtown Tampa attractions are next up along the Tampa Riverwalk. Most likely if you are not specifically visiting the Tampa Museum of Art or Glazer Children's Museum you will pass on them. There is parking much closer if they are your focus. However the Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park often has events and gatherings of interest. Not to mention wide open spaces and a splashpad. The newly remodeled FMPA or Florida Museum of Photographic Arts is here as well all along the Hillsborough River.
All three are interconnected. As you approach the convention center you will be looking over at Davis Islands and Tampa General Hospital. The Tampa Convention Center has just been remodeled and serves as somewhat of a distraction along the Tampa Riverwalk. No need to worry just enjoy your walk and enjoy the views. Things are about to get even more interesting.
The Tampa Convention Center Marina is hard not to notice on the Tampa Riverwalk. The Tampa Bay Rocket & Pirate Water Taxi are located here. You will easily tell them apart. The Pirate Water Taxi is appropriately colored. The Tampa Riverwalk rentals are just a hundred yards further east and you will be surprised what you can rent there.
To the south, Garrison Channel and to the north is Water Street. Between the two is a large waterfront park with a lot going on. Usually groups will meet here and many children will be playing on the attractions. There is also a pier and much to see. Across the Garrison Channel is Harbour Island and if you are tired the TECO line streetcar passes by every 15 minutes or so. On the east side of the Tampa History Museum there is a Publix Supermarket and great parking lot for after you brush up on your local history
Also along the Garrison Channel are attractions. The SS American Victory Ship, Water taxi and of course the Curtis Hixon Park. By now you will have also seen the Pirate Ship that Tampa is famous for. Next up is Sparkman Wharf and the Florida Aquarium which looks like a wave shaped building. Then You can catch the TECO line for a ride to Ybor City and an Original Cuban Sandwich. Don't think of it as downtown Tampa. Think of it as a the largest park you have been to. See you soon out walking in Downtown Tampa.
