People in Tampa go to Ben T Davis Beach and Davis Islands Beach primarily. If they are wanting to go to the Gulf of Mexico then most would go to either Clearwater Beach, St Pete Beach or one of the beaches between those two. Having boat rentals opens many new options.
Ben T Davis Beach is not a dog friendly beach and is on Tampa Bay. No dogs are allowed on the actual beach area. The Same applied for the main beach on Davis Islands south of downtown Tampa FL. However, Davis Islands (on Hillsborough Bay) has both a dog park and a beach which allows dogs. There are supplies for poop patrol and the beach is an ok one.
Of these two beaches I prefer Ben Davis beach because of the options and nearby attractions. Namely The Courtney Campbell Trail, picnic shelters the restaurants and beach bar. If you are near the Tampa International Airport or planning on driving over the Courtney Campbell Causeway it is worth checking out.
There are so many reasons to like Clearwater Beach. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Pier 60, The Beachwalk and the nightly sunset festival are all great reasons all by themselves. Add to that the equipment rentals, variety of cruises available and the local restaurants and bars and it is a no brainer. Some will like Caladesi Island to the north but most believe it just takes to long to get to.
If you are spending a few days at Clearwater Beach then no need for a car. It is a lot like Waikiki Beach, everything is walkable and on a Barrier Island.
Honeymoon Island State Park is worth investigating but it is way to far from Tampa or even the Tampa International Airport to say that people in Tampa FL would prefer it.
Just to the south of Clearwater Beach and along the Beachwalk you will come to a large park area beside the inlet. In the off season you can often get parking here if you did bring a car. There are picnic tables and a small beach area.
Indian Rocks Beach is another barrier island and it too is south of Clearwater Beach. It is harder to get to unless you take the Howard Franklin Bridge. This is just one of several adjacent expansive white sand beaches that will not disappoint. The sand looks just like Madeira Beach or other Suncoast Beaches in Pinellas County and of course there are numerous seafood restaurants to go with the beautiful beaches.
St Pete Beach is one of the finest beaches in the Tampa Bay area. It reminds me of Treasure Island but not for the reasons some would suspect. Expect to find amazing and historic hotels and some of the best beaches in Tampa Bay. If you are spending a few hours in the area after you are finished on the beach take some time and drive Gulf Boulevard. If you will then you will begin to realize why the Sun Coast Beaches are the best in America.
No, most people in Tampa Bay or Tampa FL do not go here for a trip to the beach. The nicest beach in the park is North Beach but I mentioned this place because it is unique and gorgeous. At some point if you live in Tampa FL you should visit here if you have a beach "bucket list". The only beach in this area I suggest passing on is Apollo Beach Nature Preserve which is pretty much a waste of time.
