The Clearwater Beach sand is so white because it is made up of quartz powder from the Appalachian Mountains. The Appalachian Mountains begin in Central Alabama and sand washed down from there to the Gulf Coast during the last ice age. Think of it as God's gift to Florida beaches.
If you want to know what Clearwater Beach originally looked like just head north to Caladesi Island State Park. I'm sure it looked very similar before the miles of sugar white sand poured into the gulf and slowly made it's way onto the shores of the Florida Gulf Coast.
I was just walking on those Gulf Coast sands yesterday and leaned over to grab a handful of it. I was thinking of how much better it felt than the sand on Guam or Hawaii where I spent my early 20's so long ago. This sugar white sand feels as if it should stick to your hands but not one piece did. I have never been to walking in the Appalachian Mountains but I certainly thank them.
After visiting here you will soon become a believer in the beaches in Florida. Clearwater's trademark white sand is very similar to the best beaches to the north or on Siesta Key. What sets us apart is Clearwater Beach is on a barrier island and the town is just so amazing. Schedule your visit or move to this location today and walk along the best beaches in the world.
