St Petersburg is nicer if you are interested in the beach. Tampa FL is nicer if you are not beach oriented and want to live in a more modern and upscale city. Tampa FL is within 30 minutes of Clearwater Beach which is obviously on the west side of Clearwater FL. Tampa International Airport is about 45 minutes from St Pete Beach.
Downtown Tampa is on another level compared to St Petersburg. High rises, art festivals and museums are around every corner many celebrating the cities rich history. Not to mention all of the canals, Channelside District, Water Street, the Tampa Riverwalk and Tampa's nightlife. It is certainly a very walkable downtown even without the Tampa Riverwalk. Not to mention having a thriving culture scene.
Just a few more of the things you will find in Downtown Tampa or near it include the Florida Aquarium, Busch Gardens, Hillsborough River, and great Tampa hotels all within 15 minutes of the Tampa airport.
Both are actually considered within the Tampa Bay area. I actually used to live in Fort Lauderdale and 100% prefer St Pete Beach to the Fort Lauderdale beach and the city as well. You will find St Pete Beach is amazing and well suited for families although there are plenty of music venues and plenty of bar hopping can be done. It is certainly one of the best beaches in FL.
St Petersburg FL is in Pinellas County as apposed to Hillsborough County which Tampa is within. If you are a fan of piers the St Pete Pier is actually on the eastern side of St Petersburg and reaches out into Tampa Bay. There are ferry rides, beautiful beaches and people everywhere you look.
