Yes Tampa is safer than Orlando. According to the FBI 1 in 178 vs 1 in 121. The 1 in 178 is the odds of someone in Tampa being the victim of a Violent Crime. The 1 in 121 reflects the odds of someone in Orlando FL being the victim of a violent crime. To be honest, I was surprised.
1 in 178 comes out to way less than a 1% chance and so does 1 in 121. Still that level is to high, but there are things you can do to further decrease your chances of being a victim. Namely limiting your exposure to the most dangerous areas, and the exposure of your valuables to those who would relieve you of the burden of them. In both of these cities that especially applies in downtown areas and areas without much police presence.
I have been to the beaches so many times without incident. Rarely have I really seen anything other than a drunk acting up which is to be expected. Clearwater Beach is a party town and everyone wants to have a good time. If you head to the beaches, mind your stuff. That is the biggest risk, I have even seen fishing poles get taken off of the piers.
Did you know that you can drink on the riverwalk? Few do but yes you can. You have to have purchased the beverage from an approved location and have it in their container. So what is Orlando's answer to the riverwalk? Lake Eola in Downtown Orlando has a trail around it and some great views. Even though Orlando is a party town and has some great restaurants, another Tampa win.
