Yes, statistically Tampa is safe from hurricanes. However, Tampa Bay will most likely eventually get a direct hit from one. That is why insurance rates are what they are. It has been over 100 years since a major hurricane has struck Tampa Bay of city of Tampa.
Life threatening storm surge is what coastal Florida residents should fear most. The most intense storms like hurricane Ian brought with it a nearly 14 foot life threatening storm surge, that sadly did take lives. Downtown Tampa is around 20 feet above sea level. Much of the gulf coast area and South Tampa would have been under water.
Well sadly it is to late to up your insurance. The companies will not let you make last minute changes. I have lived through some very intense hurricanes and typhoons when I lived on Guam. I say, just secure your home as early on as possible and then leave. The earlier you or your loved one leave the better because it get harder to actually leave the late you wait. The highways get jammed, airports are packed and so are the flights. Not to mention getting somewhere to stay also gets difficult.
Imagine going to the closest strip mall after a hurricane and seeing large boats stacked up in it's parking lot. That is what a major hurricane storm surge does. Imagine driving out to a seaside town or barrier islands to find the roads are gone. If and when a major hurricane heads to your area, get out and if needed make the repairs to your home.
