Many items you will need are cheaper in Clearwater Beach than in Tampa FL. Especially once you get out on the island you will be paying a premium for items even at grocery stores. That cost is probably offset by the mileage you will need to drive, parking expenses (if you have a car) and of course time spent off of your vacation driving plus the stress of it.
Clearwater Beach is on a barrier island. Clearwater Florida lies just off of the Gulf Coast between the beach and Tampa. Both are in the Tampa Bay area and only a bridge separates them. Clearwater FL may be a great alternative if you cannot get the room at the beach affordably. In addition there are numerous smaller beaches nearby which are very attractive. St Pete Beach is about a 30 minute drive south.
Tampa has the following attractions. In downtown Tampa you have the Tampa International Airport, Florida Aquarium, cruise ships, Busch Gardens, Zoo Tampa and many museums, Art galleries etc. Clearwater has the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Clearwater Beach is nearby and apposed to the Tampa airport they have the Clearwater International Airport. Downtown Clearwater is a very distant second to Downtown Tampa FL.
A white sand beach is the norm on Florida's Gulf Coast. You will find beautiful beaches from Pensacola all the way south of Naples although some are more secluded than others. When you consider the tourist attractions, natural beauty of the beautiful white sand beach here and all that is within walking distance that pushes Clearwater Beach to the top of the list. On this part of the Florida coast the only thing you will not like, is when it is time to leave.
