Tampa is safer than Miami. Actually Miami is only safer than 8% of cities nationwide. Tampa is safer than 20% of cities nationwide. From the glass half empty perspective Tampa is more dangerous than 80% of cities and Miami is more dangerous than 92%. Probably not something to put on a travel brochure.
I have lived in several parts of Miami and I believe Miami's crime rate goes under reported. 3 times I witnessed women being robbed of their groceries at Publix. The amount of walkout thefts in stores like Home Depot is staggering. Most thefts under $20 in stores are overlooked by store owners. Home Depot uses the term "Shrinkage" which means their inventory shrank. Miami's reputation is well deserved.
Tampa in also safer than Orlando. I have yet to witness the occurrence of a violent crime however violent crimes happen in every Florida city, and I have seen the after effects in Tampa. There are some places to avoid which will lower your odds of being a victim. Those areas are primarily the northern part of Downtown Tampa and for a couple of miles to the north of it. Northern Ybor City is also rather dangerous statistically.
You can definitely lower your chances to making a contribution to this rate. Most Tampa residents know the drill but some have to learn the lesson. Don't just lock up valuables. Keep them out of sight. In many instances all you have to do is a better job than most people. Thieves like easy targets and people who look like willing victims. How do I know? I am a retired police officer. Between the two cities, Tampa Wins and is the safer Florida city.
