It is 4.14 miles from the eastern Tampa FL side of the bridge to the western Clearwater FL side of the bridge. The bridge is over 400 feet high at it's highest point (higher than my drome can legally fly) and it is over 90 feet wide.
The Courtney Campbell Causeway is actually longer than the bridge. The Courtney Campbell Causeway is 8.5 miles long and even longer if you include the variations of the name like east and west. This existing bridge has two lanes headed to the Clearwater side and two lanes headed to the Tampa FL side. It is possibly the most photographed bridge in the Tampa Bay area.
Who was Courtney Campbell? Courtney W. Campbell is the lady the bridge was named after in 1948. Before that it was named the Davis Causeway and at one time early on it was a toll road. Amazingly it was originally built for, under a million dollars. Think about that when you look at current home prices. Construction began in 1927 and the bridge opened in 1934 and the original toll was a whopping 25 cents.
Yes Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties are separated by this same bridge. Hillsborough County is on the eastern side and Pinellas County is on the western or Gulf Coast, Clearwater Florida side. There have been updates to this masterpiece and it is a far cry from the original bridge. Suicide attempts have been a factor with the structure to receive construction updates to deter suicide attempts. The Florida Department of Transportation and Federal Government own the bridge now.
