Tampa's Bayshore Boulevard runs alongside Hillsborough Bay and is the second longest continuous sidewalk in the world. This road runs from the north side of Ballast Point Park to the Platt Street Bridge, Hyde Park area 4.5 miles to the north. Hyde Park borders Downtown Tampa on its west side. The idea for this road was originally conceived in the 1890's.
Believe it or not the median used to be the home of a trolley car which operated between the northbound and southbound lanes. The cars made their appearance around 1926 and operated for 20 years until being removed in 1946. Trolley cars similar to what you would have seen then still operate in Downtown Tampa.
The route now features art and beautiful landscaping in the median. This was done as part of a 1.5 million dollar renovation back in 2012 to prepare for the Republican National Convention. This was definitely beneficial to the prestigious homes along the roads' western side. These historic homes line the roadway between the many high rise condominiums.
The sidewalk is almost exactly 4 miles long and 10 feet wide. It leads to the many additional sidewalks that lead downtown and is far enough from road traffic for pedestrian safely walk or ride along this scenic route. Bayshore Boulevard is one of the most well known features of South Tampa Florida. It is the longest in the nation but second longest worldwide.
The boulevard's balustrade has been in place since 1934 and was completed in 1939. This railing not only keeps those enjoying the scenic views from harm along this long sidewalk it also ads a lot aesthetically. At times this city received and still receives a lot of television coverage and Bayshore Boulevard is often included.
The Bayshore Boulevard Greenway and the Bayshore Greenway Trail are two names you will hear associated with this roadway. They include a 3 mile long bike lane, Columbus Statue Park the Linear Park and the many workout stations and benches along Bayshore Blvd. Fitting for a climate like the one we have in Tampa Bay.
There are also some beautiful sights we will leave to your discovery. Keep an eye out for them but mind your safety and the safety of those around you. See you soon along the Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa Florida.
