Tampa is more expensive to live, all things considered. I have lived in both locations and I am very familiar with the property tax rates and cost of living in both of these Central Florida cities. There are some very expensive cities in the Greater Orlando area but, we will just consider Orlando.
Both of these Central Florida cities are good places to live. Both have theme parks and both should be considered a major city. Both Tampa and Orlando have good weather but there are some stark differences. The average home prices in the better parts of the city are much higher in Tampa Bay. Property taxes are ever so slightly higher in Tampa Bay and our public transportation costs and availability are not as favorable.
Usually in major cities the cost of living is higher. However there are ways that you save. Namely your commute time will be shorter and less expensive. In most areas of Tampa Bay a grocery store is within 5 minutes drive time. Medical providers are also found in the more densely populated areas and there are many city and county parks which are free, or very inexpensive. After paying electric bills, for many not much money is left.
One of the expenses you will encounter than many overlook is parking. It is widely available because it is expensive and the price can vary if there is an event or by time of day. Higher demand means higher cost in a lot of areas. Tampa residents know this well. At least in Downtown Tampa residents can use the trolley in many areas.
Affordable housing involves more than home prices. It involves homeowners insurance which is much lower in Orlando. Even though the Tampa Bay area very rarely gets hit by severe storms Orlando is in a lower risk area for wind damage. Trust me, it seems insurance goes up every year even though I live in a concrete home with a metal roof. If you are considering a move look at the overall cost of housing not just seemingly affordable homes.
The major attraction in Orlando is obviously the theme parks. Not everyone moves there for moderate weather. Orlando takes the lead with overall job opportunities but most are at the them parks and are lower paying side of the job market. Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and Universal Orlando Resort are always looking for workers especially just before the peak seasons.
Tampa stays warmer through the year. It is the 3rd largest Florida city, we have Busch Gardens Tampa and a thriving job market and between the two, Tampa looks like more of a new city. Tampa's tourism industry is more of an asset to our daily way of life. and we have an afternoon ocean breeze for a reason. We have the best beaches and a better overall living score in my book.
